A readable CV makes information easy to find. Formatting should support your experience rather than distract from it. Choose a simple layout, use it consistently and inspect the file you actually plan to send.
Keep structure predictable
Use clear headings for contact information, experience, education and skills. Group dates and job titles consistently. Avoid shrinking the text to squeeze in unrelated detail. National Careers Service guidance recommends a clear font at size 11 or above, headings and bullet points, with a consistent style.
Follow the application instructions
There is no single file format that suits every employer. If the form asks for PDF, send a PDF. If it asks for another format, do not assume the PDF is an acceptable replacement. This starter exports through your browser's print dialog. It does not create a Word document.
Save a PDF from the builder
Fill in your details and select Print / save PDF. Choose your browser's Save as PDF destination. Select the appropriate paper size and review the print preview before saving. Browser settings can change margins and add headers or footers; disable unwanted browser headers and footers if they appear. There is no download paywall in this starter.
Open the saved file
Check every page, especially where a section continues onto the next page. Make sure text is not cut off, headings are not stranded and contact details remain readable. Try selecting the text in the PDF and read the selected result. That is a practical check, not a guarantee of compatibility with every recruitment system.
Review on more than one screen
A desktop preview can hide problems that become obvious on a smaller screen. Look at the PDF on a phone as well. Confirm that links, if present, are readable and point to the right profile. Use a clear file name and verify the file opens before attaching it.
Final checks
- Correct application version and file type.
- Readable text and consistent dates.
- No blank pages or clipped sections.
- No example text, private notes or unsupported claims.
- Contact details checked one last time.
Formatting is the last pass, not a replacement for accurate content.
